Background & Objective: academic failure has always been one of the major challenges of higher education institutions that could cause serious individual and social outcomes This study aimed to analysis the effect of potential factors on students academic failure in Kerman University of Medical Sciences Iran Methods: This was an unmatched casecontrol study The study population consisted of all undergraduate students of Kerman University of Medical Sciences in two semesters in 2012 From 514 selected students 246 were assigned to the case group and the rest were studied in the control group Data were collected using a selfadministered questionnaire via consensus methodology The questionnaire consisted of three sections: individual family and academic factors Reliability of the questionnaire was approved by a group of faculty members and its internal consistency was estimated as 082 Data were analyzed using SPSS software Results: The mean age of studied students was 222 years The mean grade point average (GPA) of was 142 and 169 in cases and controls respectively Academic failure was 164 times more in boys than the girls (P = 002) and 159 times more in students who had a sense of frustration (P = 002) Students who reported using drugs tobacco or alcohol experienced academic failure 639 times more than the others (P = 001) Conclusion: Academic failure is a phenomenon affected by multiple factors Therefore reducing it requires the participation of a wide range of people taking part in students learning

Background & Objective: Publishing in journals indexed in wellknown indexes is the best way to present an article internationally It also illustrates the contribution of scholars to the advancement of knowledge in the world This study aimed to investigate the scientific output of Kerman University of Medical Sciences Iran in Web of Science (WOS) during 2004 to 2013 Methods: This applied research uses scientometrics and citation methods to investigate the scientific publications of Kerman University of Medical Sciences during 20042013 The data were gathered from Web of Science Results: During this time period researchers at Kerman University of Medical Sciences had published 1053 documents in WOS Most of the documents were in article format The growth rate of scientific contribution was 70% and the universitys Hindex was 30 The papers distribution followed the Lotkas law In total the papers had received 4619 citations Only 247% of papers were written by one author The studied researchers had the most collaboration with Tehran University of Medical Sciences among Iranian universities and the University of Amsterdam among foreign universities The fields pharmacy and pharmacology had produced the most papers Conclusion: The results indicated a growing trend in publications and high rates of scientific collaboration by Kerman University of Medical Sciences It is suggested that different departments follow the experience of departments with the most productivity in order to increase their output In this way all departments will contribute to the universitys scientific output Moroever new policies should be considered to increase the citation rate

Background & Objective: Several factors play an integral role in the quality of higher education and improving its processes Professional role modeling is one of the most determining factors in achieving educational goals and fostering better learning Hence the aim of this study was to investigate the scientific characteristics of positive and negative role models among medical educators from the viewpoint of the dentistry and pharmacy students in Kerman University of Medical Sciences (Kerman Iran) Methods: In this descriptive analytical crosssectional study a structured and selfadministered questionnaire was completed by 94 senior pharmacy and dentistry students The questionnaire contained prespecified items in 3 sections relating to the demographic characteristics of respondents and scientific characteristics of positive and negative role models Results: The highest mean scores for positive role models were given to features as being respectful to colleagues (875) being knowledgeable (852) having teaching competencies (849) being good tempered (845) and being kind (843) There was not a statistically significant difference between the positive role models [age gender education level (basicclinical)] and the scientific rank The highest mean scores for negative role models were given to the features as deserving blame (697) having no teaching competencies (641) not being kind (609) not being a good manager (608) and not being respectful to students (603) There was only a significant difference between the negative role models and scientific rank (P = 0029) Totally 2 positive and 3 negative characteristics were identified for professional and nonprofessional role models These characteristics can be classified into ethical behavior and communication educational and managerial skills and scientific competencies There was not a statistically significant difference regarding the association between the scientific characteristics of positive and negative role models and the general characteristics of the respondents in terms of age variable Conclusion: Our results suggested that the positive and negative characteristics of teachers formed a significant part in their acceptance and choosing them as role models from the perspectives of students To achieve the educational goals and improving our higher education system special attention should be given to these aspects as personality professionalism and scientific characteristics

Background and Objective: Scholarship is of such a great importance that even the developed countries pay special attention to it while in developing countries it has been left unattended and there is no appropriate management to benefit from the its advantages For this scholarship has to be considered more seriously in the planning system of the country in order to achieve the highest yield beside all expenses Methods: Using registered documents as one of the best information sources 366 students awarded scholarship between19972003 were enrolled into the study Students personal information at the time of going abroad scholarship granted university local university and students major and duration of study were considered as useful information and excluded carefully from electronic and paper documents under the cooperation of the scholarship office of Ministry of Health and Medical Education Results: Most of the students were studying in European countries (697%) and Australian and Oceania universities (126%) The average duration of study was (±046) 407 years for PhD and (± 054)512 years for clinical specialty candidates showing a significant difference between the two groups (P‹ 0001) However the noticeable point is that nonreturning rate has been more than average for students who have received scholarship from those universities and also the ministry while scholarship holders from level three universities were successful in science generating Conclusion: The highest number of awarded scholarships belonged to the large universities in the country and based on the available information it is difficult to judge whether scholarship awarding has been distributed fairly among universities or not

Background & Objective : The importance of dispatching students to foreign countries to continue education is so obvious that even developed countries are not needless of that Hence this study was conducted to evaluate the opinion of overseas graduates who were on a scholarship about the meaning and concepts of educational achievement and its effective factors Methods : In this qualitative study 11 faculty members of Kerman University of Medical Sciences who have been graduated from foreign universities participated They were inquired into their opinions about assessment criteria of educational achievement and its effective factors using an open interview Results : Among the most important concepts of educational achievement regarding education quantity attending seminars and conferences can be pointed out The efficiency of learned materials and learning professional scientific topics are important considering education quality and learning extra topics respectively The interviewees also believed that personal factors including personality family economic affairs having professional knowledge in the field of study necessary skills in the language of the target university and its status especially tutors topic and field of research were also substantial Conclusion : Our findings suggest that concepts of academic achievement are vast and one cannot be considered successful assessing only one or some criteria Hence duration of study the amount of scientific products and their quality the amount of scientific connections and the application of learned topics by the learner are to be noted
